Peaking will struggle, if work at all with some of the heavier filters.Ĭheck out Tiffen's diffusion page, with lots of useful videos showing the effects of each. Tiffen Glimmer Glass 1 is the least extreme filter, it gives a small amount of bloom and pulls down highlight contrast slightly, but shadows seems to. A good all around filter, probably why it’s the most used diffusion filter.

A '1' or '2' are very heavy and you'll only want to use them at the wider focal lengths or you're sure you want such an extreme effect. Tiffen Black Pro-Mist 1/4 is in the middle when it comes to bloom effect and pulling down highlight/shadow contrast. A ½ on 21mm for instance is noticeable, but on 50mm will be quite heavy and you may want to use a ¼ or an 1/8th. One thing to remember and bear in mind whilst shooting however is that the longer the focal length, the more pronounced the effect will be with the same filter.

I prefer the Black Pro-Mists over the regular as I find they keep the contrast better - however as you've said you want to raise the blacks a bit, perhaps the regular Pro-Mists might be more what you're after. They do get softer and more milky the higher the strength you use. Soft FX usually just softens the image, whereas the Pro-Mists bloom the image (which in turn, takes the edge off fine detail) whilst retaining at least some sharpness.
